Pipes & Pipestone

Pipestone, also known as catlinite, is typically a deep red to pale orange color. Ideal for carving, it has a hardness of 2.5.

This stone is quarried in the ancient mine at Pipestone, Minnesota. Beautifully soft and workable, this particular batch is noticeably thicker than usual pieces sold on the market.

The pieces price out at $18 per pound.

We also have more stone available than what is listed - feel free to contact us with any special requests.

Please note: There are naturally-occurring fissures, cracks, and inclusions in the stone that are sometimes very hard to see and these must be taken into account when working with it. Examine the stone carefully, and if you see any fissures or hairline, incipient cracks, these should obviously be avoided and not incorporated into any carved area. Sometimes, even with careful examination, the natural fragility of pipestone will cause cracks to appear in a finished or nearly-finished piece.
