Native American Church Fan
This Native American Church fan was created by Michael Running Shield, grandson of the late Emerson Spider, the noted beadworker and Native American Church elder.
The selected and trimmed blue macaw feathers are from certified captive-bred birds in Rapid City, South Dakota. There is a band of featherwork ("florals") near the base of each feather made of rooster hackles, Lady Amhearst pheasant feathers, and dyed duck feathers with a cut-work tipi worked in feathers in the center of the fan. Underneath the florals, each feather base is embellished with finely-wrought threadwork. The handle of the fan is beaded with typical "peyote" designs in 13/0 "cut" beads.
It is rare for us to have Native American Church items, especially of this quality and from such a collectible artist. You may recognize Michael's name from the wonderful bracelets of his that we offer occasionally.
