Red Willow Bark
(can'sa'sa, Cornus amomomn, Cornus stoloni fera). This is the inner bark of the red dogwood and is the basic ingredient of traditional Plains smoking mixtures. Can'sa'sa is commonly mixed with bearberry and a little lovage root and is very seasonal. It is only gathered after hard freezes in the fall and only until the first Thunder sounds in the spring.
