Beaded Dance Fan
Michael Running Shield - Oglala/Lakota
Michael Running Shield is an enrolled member of the Oglala/Lakota Sioux of the Pine Ridge Reservation here in South Dakota.
This elegant beaded dance fan is 26 inches long (10 inches for the fringe). The hand painted imitation eagle feathers are highlighted at the tip with a stripe of red paint and rhinestones. The handle is beaded with size 13 cut beads. The geometric design is emblamatic of the peyote stich technique. The white buckskin fringe is twisted and even and moves beautifully.
Whether for use or display this fan is a piece of contemporary Northern Plains Native American art.
