Known as Compass Plant because of the odd north-to-south growth habit of the leaves, this Native American herb has an enormous root full of a strongly scented gummy resin.
Description

Pieces of the root are often placed on the hot rocks during sweatlodge for ritual smudging ceremony.

Medicinal uses: Inhaling the smoke is allegedly analgesic as a herbal remedy for headaches. The root may also be ground up and packed into Sun Dance wounds or a tonic tea may be infused from the leaves.

When fresh, the resin in Native American plant has a very distinctive, almost cloying, smell.
