Botanicals & Herbs

Botanicals such as sage, sweetgrass and other dried herbs have always played a significant role in the culture and beliefs of Native Americans.

For centuries, the Plains Indians have used herbs and plants for numerous medicinal, spiritual and nutritional needs.

Many of the herbal remedies used by Americans today come from the American Indians' rich tradition of using the healing powers of nature. These herbs provided both spiritual and medicinal healing for the Plains Indians.

Rituals such as smudging are common practice among Native Americans. Both sage and sweetgrass are regular herbs used in smudging ceremonies. Smudging uses the smoke from the burning herbs to cleanse the body, an object, or a given area of negative influences.

The Sioux Trading Post, a turn-of-the-century trading company located within Prairie Edge, offers a broad selection of botanicals and other ceremonial and healing herbs.
