Quick Overview
This pendant was carved by Dorian New Holy, an Oglala Lakota man enrolled on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The material is a slice from an elk antler rosette - the thick part of the antler that attaches to the head of the animal.
Description
Dorian New Holy - Oglala/Lakota

It was worked in a low relief and then inked to highlight the carvings. The pendant depicts Apache "Gans" dancers whirling around a fire; these ceremonial dancers are shown with their distinctive wands, crowned "tablita"-style mask/headdress and the traditional Apache moccasins with the up-turned toes.

The size of this piece and its finely-wrought detail belie its feeling of monumentality. This wearable sculpture is simply breath-taking.

Measures 2 1/2 inches across by 1/4 inch thick. Strung with glass beads.
